Review:
I have always taken pride in my ability to stomach any and all gore, and any and all fucked up shit you can find in the bowels of the Internet. However, Grotesque nearly made me sick to my stomach. The gore was great, but I as I take time to think through the movie, what disturbed me the most was the raw acting, as well as Japan's fearlessness in showing straight up molestation before you are even 30 minutes into the film. I have to give the movie props for making me so uncomfortable I had to pause the movie more than one time while I watched it, and I even covered my eyes and ears. That being said, the storyline was definitely lackluster, and only so much torture for about 2 hours can go so far. Grossly disturbing? Definitely. Scary? Ehhh. Knowing that could be crazy doctors lurking on the streets ready to kidnap you and molest and torture you, making sure to keep you alive for as long as possible is kind of scary. It makes me sad that final scenes cracked my chunky ass up. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it and given it a higher over all rating, if I were a sadist or masochist. Japan has some great balls though, and I tip my hat to the actors and actress for their great performances... America wouldn't touch this with a ten foot pole.
Note: Apparently there is another Japanese movie called "Grotesque" that came out during the 80s. It seems more reminiscent of Last House on the Left or something; no doctors there. Will check that one out for sure though, just for a morsel of 80s horror, a guilty pleasure of mine.
